The Journal of Living Fiqh (JLF) is an esteemed international academic publication that plays a pivotal role in advancing both theoretical and practical discourse rooted in the traditions of classical Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). Founded in 2024 by the JAGMAN Institutes in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the journal has established itself as a dedicated platform for the dissemination of original, innovative, and pertinent scholarly work that draws upon the rich heritage of Islamic law. By emphasizing the revitalization of classical perspectives while simultaneously addressing contemporary issues, JLF provides a scholarly environment conducive to the critical examination of the relationship between tradition and modernity. Since its inception, the journal has welcomed contributions from scholars across various disciplines, exploring a wide array of topics, including political jurisprudence, international law from an Islamic perspective, contextual applications of fiqh in Muslim-majority countries, and the integration of Islamic law with cultural studies, gender issues, and environmental concerns. This multidimensional thematic scope is bolstered by both textual analysis and empirical fieldwork, thereby enhancing the academic depth of its publications.
Methodologically, JLF embraces a diverse range of perspectives, encompassing legal, philosophical, historical, mystical (Sufi), theological, and other approaches. This inclusive academic orientation positions the journal as a dynamic forum where traditional Islamic scholarship intersects with contemporary interdisciplinary inquiry. Initially, the journal primarily featured contributions from scholars affiliated with the JAGMAN Institutes; however, its growing reputation has attracted a more diverse array of contributors, both domestically and internationally. The inclusion of voices beyond the founding institution has not only diversified but also significantly elevated the intellectual caliber of the journal. Despite early challenges in academic presentation and rigor, the journal has demonstrated consistent improvement in formatting, editorial standards, and peer-review practices.
Published biannually in March and October, JLF continues to prioritize Islam and Muslim experiences as central subjects of scholarly investigation. It invites rigorous studies that engage with traditional fiqh, whether through narrowly focused themes or broader interdisciplinary perspectives. By providing a platform for comprehensive exploration of Islamic law in both local and global contexts, the journal investigates how fiqh influences Muslim lives and addresses contemporary challenges. In this manner, the Journal of Living Fiqh serves as a vital medium for intellectual exchange and the dissemination of ideas, facilitating productive scholarly dialogue among researchers, writers, and readers from diverse traditions. With its ongoing commitment to promoting high-quality research on the multifaceted dimensions of Islamic law, JLF is fostering a vibrant academic community dedicated to enhancing the understanding of fiqh in the modern world.
