Journal History
In June 2019, a group of emerging scholars from diverse academic fields gathered in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, driven by a shared commitment to the exploration and dissemination of novel concepts within the domain of knowledge. This group comprised individuals specializing in fields such as Islamic law, Qur’anic studies, sociology, social development, social work, and so on. Their preliminary gatherings were held in an informal setting known as “Ngopi Bareng” (Coffee Talks), which evolved into an intellectual forum for the exchange of interdisciplinary insights and critical discourse. From this initiative, they envisioned the establishment of an academic community named JAGMAN (Jam'iyah Ahlul Ghahwah al-Mu'tabarah an-Nahdliyyah), which seeks to harmonize the values of traditional pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) with a modern academic ethos.
By 2024, this initiative had matured into a formal social institution dedicated to the writing, management, and training associated with the publication of reputable international journals. The institution's mission is to connect emerging scholars, particularly those from pesantren backgrounds, with the global academic community through credible and impactful scholarly publications. A prominent endeavor within this framework is the Journal of Living Fiqh, an academic journal committed to the dissemination of original and contemporary ideas grounded in the classical tradition of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh).
The Journal of Living Fiqh exemplifies JAGMAN’s dedication to enhancing the scholarly standing of the pesantren tradition within the context of international academic discourse. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach and consistently revitalizing traditional values, the journal positions fiqh not merely as a normative discourse but as a dynamic field of study pertinent to contemporary social issues. The editorial team's background, deeply rooted in pesantren culture, provides the journal with a distinctive and authoritative perspective in addressing fiqh-related topics for a global audience. Consequently, the Journal of Living Fiqh functions not only as a platform for scholarly dissemination but also as a conduit for dialogue between Islamic tradition and the broader landscape of global academic development.
